Read the guide ↗Trade finance bridges timing, trust and information gaps between buyers and sellers. Tools include documentary credits, collections, guarantees, receivables finance and working-capital facilities. The right structure depends on the contract, payment terms, counterparties, goods, jurisdiction and documents. Begin by mapping the cash-flow gap and risks each party needs to manage.
A documentary credit is an issuing bank's undertaking to honour a complying presentation. The buyer applies, the bank issues, an advising bank may authenticate, and the seller ships and presents documents. Banks examine documents, not goods. Common issues include inconsistent data, missed dates, ambiguous requirements and late amendments. Align the credit with the sales contract before shipment.
Factoring can combine receivables funding with ledger or collection services. Forfaiting may involve purchasing export receivables without recourse, subject to structure. Compare recourse, debtor notification, eligible invoices, concentration limits, fees, currency and assignment requirements. The lowest headline rate may not produce the best net cash or operational fit.
